Roosters Brewery Harrogate Marketing and Portrait Photography

Roosters Brewery is a name I’ve known for years. I remember drinking Yankee around Leeds, and being excited when I first tried Baby Face Assassin (I’ve still not managed to try the Double Assasin version yet). So when Tom got in touch to commission me to capture some imagery for them it was great to get the chance to really dig in behind the scenes at the Brewery.

They were celebrating 25 years since the Brewery started. So along with a refreshed website, the images were used as part of a booklet telling the story of Roosters. So the brief was nice and simple, document the brewday and activity as well and capturing a range of portraits for team profiles. Starting the shoot on a cold and dark winters morning meant a mix of styles to the portraits that I carried throughout the day. Capturing each team member with studio lighting, natural light indoors and a more uniform range of head shots outside.

They are starting year 26 off with a bang, and moving from the old space in Knaresborough to a bigger, brighter location. The new warehouse space is located just outside of Harrogate and will also feature a taproom. I look forward to getting back and having a pint in the new spot.

Liverpool Travel Photography | Hop & Barley Volume 8

Once famous as the city with a pub on every corner, Liverpool is one of those places where it’s never been difficult to get a good drink. And in that respect at least, little appears to have changed. Even though the landscape has changed indelibly - tough industrial past softened in the transition to vibrant modern city - the pubs still possess a magnetic attraction. Grand old boozers suck you in with their splendour, and underground drinking holes hold dark, decadent appeal.” Sam Turner, Hop & Barley Volume 8

The imagery here features a nice cross section of the different areas of my work. A mix of travel photography, street photography, interiors, as well as still life and portraiture. Working with the team at Hop & Barley I was commissioned to capture a selection of photography for the Liverpool focused Volume 8.

The project was split into a few different sections. We explored the city creating images of the obvious main sights, as well as digging into the more obscure, and finding different takes to sum up the feel of the city. Later in the day we visited a wide variety of the pubs, bars and breweries that call the city home, capturing the atmosphere and feel of each space. These included the maritime referencing The Ship and Mitre, craft mecca Dead Crafty Beer Co just across the road. Cosy corner pub The Grapes over on Roscoe Street, the semi speakeasy 23 Club underneath the Clove Hitch restaurant (sadly no longer open). Back towards the centre of town we stopped by the Merchant, a vast space, serving pizza and well know for putting on big name DJ’s. Finishing off we wandered over to Black Lodge in the Baltic Triangle area, a new microbrewery and taproom, arriving before the evening rush it was the perfect spot to capture some portraits of Steven Burgess for the In Conversation feature.

To see the full feature get a copy of Hop & Barley Volume 8 here.

“Liverpool’s strength lies in venues of this kind; their quirky charm shaped by the city’s past and the Scouse desire to plough a different furrow. It may not match up to fellow northern powerhouses Manchester and Leeds in terms of the depth and maturity of its beer scene, but it possesses an allure that remains hard to beat. A handsome, compact city centre, a friendly welcome and a respect for heritage will surely see it thrive in the years to come.” Sam Turner, Hop & Barley Volume 8

Vibrant Forest | New bottle and can designs | Product Photography

Vibrant Forest relaunched their brand with the help of Studio Parr last year. The new identity has now been rolled out across all of their products. Featuring a range of abstract textures, patterns, as well as detailed illustrations, all mixed together to include the Forest Icon.

To keep the images I captured here inline with the look and feel of the brand I captured the product photography as textured layflats. Each individual bottle or can playing with some natural elements to blend with or contrast the graphics.

Even more changes are ahead for them with a new Brewery, shop and Taproom being built at the moment just below Southampton.

National Railway Museum Testing Exhibition Photography York

A few weeks ago I headed over to the National Railway Museum to capture some imagery of the Testing Exhibition. I was commissioned by the York based museum to create some imagery that would help to build up a story of the different places that feature within the show.

Each of the locations that we visited we spilt into a separate “garage” that included a large format location image, as well as a selection of detail and portrait photography that I captured showcasing what made the place unique.

Working with the team at the National Railway Museum to bring the vision together was Helen at Studio HB and Robin at Hara Clark

For more of the imagery that was featured in the exhibition head on over to the Testing Exhibition photography gallery.

Albourne Estate | Sparkling Wine & Vermouth Product Photography

In preparation for the launch of 40 Vermouth, Alison Nightingale from Albourne Estate got in touch with me to produce a selection of imagery that could be used on their website and other marketing. Although the vermouth is perfect for drinking on it’s own, or with ice, the bottle featured a small fold out recipe card featuring a selection of cocktails. So I captured 8 different cocktails, as well as the vermouth on it’s own and on ice, all in a variety of suitable glasses. Along with these I used a selection of the 40 botanicals to showcase the flavours in the drink.

At the same time at Albourne Estate the newest batch of Blanc de Blancs, and Rose de Noirs was ready so we created a selection of imagery showcasing the label and some lifestyle images that could be used to promote the bottles. Finally I captured a few images of the promotional booklet that Albourne Estate are using to promote the bottles, to help tell the full story of the wines.

The Five Points Brewing Co | Product Photography

The Five Points Brewing Co commissioned me to capture a selection of product and lifestyle images to showcase their bottles, cans, kegs and casks. With Whitelocks and Turks Head being part of the Five Points family it was the prefect location to set up the images. With its marble bar, and dark velvet booths it allowed the pump clips and bottles to jump out. Keeping a mix of flash and natural lit images so that there was a wider variety of styled images available. They have expanded the can range since, as well as adding the Pembury Tavern to their new Taproom.

Ibiza Chilli Sauces | Product Photography

I was commissioned by Will at Studio Parr to shoot some imagery of the bottles he had designed for the Ibiza Chilli Co. The sauces have been made in Ibiza by Sid Shanti, using a range of different chilli’s grown on the island. So in keeping with the designs that focus on the different chilli’s in each sauce. I shots a mixture of fun and playful images using different chilli’s as lay flats, as well as some more direct detail shots of focusing on the labels and the illustrations.

Design studio photography | BML Creative, Leeds

BML Creative are a Leeds based Marketing, Brand and Communications agency. They got in touch as they needed some some photos to accompany their new website. In keeping with approachable feel to the site, they wanted some natural and relaxed imagery. The photos needed to show the overall feel of the space they have, but also plenty of the details around the studio that shared the personality of the team.

Making the use of the studio space, I captured some portraits of Co-Founders Dave and Natalie. As well as heading out into some of the shared areas within the Shine building to capture individual portraits as well.
